… then sometimes I live in darkling doorways

cool in their uncertainties …

(From ‘the sun is my true love’, Palatine Madonna)

Melbourne had a thriving young poetry culture, much more so than Sydney. Barry Dickins, self-promoted friend of the scum, was then at the very beginning of his publishing career, and just starting to develop his skills as a crowd-pleaser. He came to see me a few times after Shelton died. He said more than once, and wrote to me reiterating it, that his memories of Shelton were sacred. He seemed a complicated man, both tender and brittle, but full of goodwill for the biography. He had great humour and told dreadful stories against himself and Shelton. Once, he brought a gift of his play, Remember Ronald Ryan, and another time he unexpectedly visited with his beautiful little son, and I could only offer him two-day-old scones. He ate them and said, ‘These are the nicest stale scones I’ve ever eaten.’ He was up against deadlines, writing and painting, but he had invested his time because he wanted to be meticulous with Shelton’s memory.
